Features (Equivalent at Both Sites):

Competitive pools each measure eight 25-yard lanes by six 25-meter lanes.  Each pool has two diving boards with 13-foot wells.

Recreation pools have two-story enclosed waterslides that wind outside the buildings; a shallow, beach-like entry area and separate whirlpool tubs.  Decor and pool toys have an outer space theme at the Lakeland community pool, with comets and planets as focal points.  A 16-foot gorilla dominates the Milford pool, where an alligator and other zoo animals also reside.

5,000-square-foot fitness centers feature a central area for exercise classes as well as the latest in weight, resistance and aerobic equipment.  The machinery includes treadmills, recumbent and upright bikes, rowing machines, leg press, leg curl and leg extension machines, abdominal crunch machines, hip abduction, back extension, chest press, arm curl machine, incline and decline benches and free weights.

Field houses can accommodate up to three team sports such as basketball and volleyball at once.

Elevated running/walking tracks have banked surfaces and span the perimeter of the field houses.  At nine laps to the mile, the tracks are more forgiving than smaller configurations.

Classes with member discounts will be offered in various activities, such as swimming and aerobics.

Child Watch can be scheduled on site.

Family changing rooms are featured in addition to men’s and women’s locker rooms.

Amenities include party rentals, community activity rooms and sales of refreshments and sports apparel.

Facilities Management:

Operated by Huron Valley Schools’ Department of Continuing Education, with a full-time pool manager at each facility.  Staff members for the fitness centers, field houses and other areas are managed by the athletic director of each high school.

Construction Funding:

Construction was funded through a bond issue approved by Huron Valley School District residents in 2001.  The bond provides for a variety of much-needed upgrades to academic and athletic programs as a means to keep Huron Valley competitive with comparable school districts.

Rationale for Community Access:

Expanding the athletic facilities provided swimming pools to allow Lakeland and Milford athletes to train and compete with other schools.  These competitive pools, with the addition of community pools, fitness centers and field houses, allowed the district to extend its commitment to fitness to the community as well.

Operations Funding:

Membership enrollments, facility rentals and class fees are expected to offset the cost of operations.

Community and Student Involvement:

The athletic and recreational facilities were designed with community input.  Huron Valley students worked with the professional architects on the design of the community pools.

Facilities Architect:

Fanning/Howey Associates, Inc., Williamston, Mich.

Facilities Contractor:

Barton Malow Company, Southfield, Mich.
