MEAP Talking Points 2010

• District scores exceed state results on all 18 tests
• District scores exceed or meet county results in 17 out of 18 tests, with 4th grade
  writing 4 points below the county level
• The achievement gap for economically disadvantaged students decreased 4 points in reading and 12 points in math when comparing combined scores from 2005 to 2010
• Writing scores are low across the state.  However, the District is developing a plan to increase writing achievement for all our students through professional development and common assessments.
• District math scores average a 94% proficiency rate
• All middle school scores exceed county and state scores on all 9 tests

The Michigan Revised School Code and the State School Aid Act require the establishment of educational standards and the assessment of students' academic achievement. Accordingly, the State Board of Education, with the input of educators throughout Michigan, approved a system of academic standards and a framework within which local school districts could develop and implement curricula as they see fit.

The Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) was initiated by the State Board of Education, supported by then-Governor William G. Milken, and funded by the Michigan legislature through Public Act 307 of 1969 (Section 14).

Results of MEAP tests can be used by schools for school improvement purposes. In Huron Valley Schools, MEAP results are used as part of a comprehensive program of examining a variety of student assessments to pinpoint where students need more support or more rigor to improve student achievement.
