Middle School 21st Century Skills: Creating Curriculum Driven Facilities

Huron Valley Schools has developed new middle school programming built on 21st century skills. This new curriculum will better prepare our students for high school and their future in a global society.

The next step is community outreach which includes developing a 32-member Middle School 21st Century Skills: Creating Curriculum Driven Facilities Committee. This group, working with a facilitator, will provide input to the Board based on these guiding questions:

·        How will the revised middle school programming plan impact building usage?
·        What is the minimum enrollment necessary to maintain teaming?
·        Does the District need four or three middle schools?
·        If three schools, what are the strengths and challenges for each building?

One parent from each elementary and two from each middle school will be selected through an application process to serve on the committee, along with District personnel and Board members. Parents interested in serving on the committee must submit an application to the principal of the building they wish to represent by September 8th. Each building principal and their PTO/PTA leadership will select their representatives from the pool of applicants by September 10th in order to begin the process this September.

Committee meetings will be held from September to January. The application includes a preliminary calendar of committee meetings so applicants can see the commitment needed to serve. This timeframe allows the Board time to consider possible implementation for the 2011-12 school year.

HVS MME Results Tops in Oakland County

In March the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) was administered to 11th grade students and to eligible 12th grade students based on Michigan high school standards. Huron Valley’s scores exceeded the state averages on all six areas.

District MME scores exceeded Oakland County in all areas but one. In math, the District met the Oakland County average. HVS MME scores also increased in all areas but one, social studies, which remained at the 2009 level. However, the social studies scores for the county and state decreased from 2009. District MME scores in reading and science showed the greatest gains, increasing by six percentage points over last year’s District scores.
